Madge Gill and Visionary Art

I saw an exhibition a couple of weeks ago and felt I had to write something about it, as for some reason it seems to be flying under the radar of most art critics. It is a large retrospective of the artist Madge Gill, and is on at Orleans House in Richmond currently – for more info click here.

There are some lovely examples to view on the Henry Boxer website, a lovely resource for looking at art which has a strong inner life – I guess this search for the ‘poetry’ in life is what interests me, especially when it is followed in an intuitive, untaught way, as is the case with many self-taught or visionary artists. Henry Boxer was also one of the Madge Gill exhibition curators.

Maybe it is just the purity of her vision that appeals – someone who had a true burning heart…. and I am just happy to try to nudge some people in the direction of discovering her work.
